kiwi word of the day

munkered

basically meaning really broken and messed up.  I must have heard that word a hundred times this week as in “how’d you like our munkered arts center?”  “his house was munkered in February’s quake”  “the shearwall was pretty munkered”.  I like it.

  1. It’s one of those words that sounds like what it means. Let’s see–seventh grade English–“the tintinabulation of the bells”–it’s the same thing. I think my English teacher then, Mrs. McQuillan, called it “anamatopea”–or something like that… Still remember after 52 years, even if I can’t spell it. 🙂

  2. I’ve since realized that I think the proper term is Munted. Although Munkered is technically also correct, munted is the more common use of the word. In my early days, the kiiwi accent threw me on this one.
